The NRI investing journey.

Five steps, in the order they actually happen — from opening the right account to bringing money home.

Paperwork that pays

Returning to India

Coming home? Plan the RNOR window.

The 2–3 year status that can make moving your money home far more tax-efficient.

When you return to India for good, you don't become a full resident overnight. For a transitional period you may qualify as RNOR — Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident — during which your foreign income generally stays outside India's tax net. It's a narrow, valuable window to reorganise foreign assets before full residency begins.

01 · Check

Confirm your status

You may be RNOR if you were non-resident for 9 of the last 10 years, or in India 729 days or less over the last 7. It usually lasts two to three years.

02 · Accounts

Redesignate your accounts

NRE and FCNR accounts must be converted once you return. An RFC account can hold foreign-currency funds through the RNOR period.

03 · Foreign income

Use the window

While RNOR, foreign income is generally outside India's tax net — a chance to reorganise overseas assets before full residency begins.

Educational information only, not tax advice. RNOR status turns on day-count tests under Section 6 of the Income-tax Act that depend on your specific travel history; thresholds have been amended over time. Confirm your position with a qualified tax advisor.
